Early Life
Doja Cat (actual name Amala Ratna Zanda) was born in 1995 and attended Hollywood High School in Los Angeles, California. She has two older brothers, both of whom are physicians. Dlamini and her mother relocated from South Africa to New York City shortly after she was born. She took tap, ballet, jazz, and modern dance classes at her new school after migrating from South Africa to California when she was nine years old. After returning to Los Angeles, they spent several years at an ashram in the San Bernardino Mountains of California before returning to New York City. Dlamini was interested in dancing at her best at this point. She began by dancing in the Indian Classical Dance style, then progressed to Break Dancing.

She self-taught herself how to sing and rap using GarageBand. She shared her song on Soundcloud, an online music distribution network. In 2012, she was signed by Dr. Luke, a music producer, after her first permanent upload. He then published “Dlamini” after signing him to his label. In June 2014, she released her first single, “Purr Purr,” under the stage name “Doja Cat” (pronounced “doe-ya cat”).

Doja cat began producing songs for fun before deciding to upload them to the internet so that others might listen to them. She published her first official song, “So High,” in 2013, and it became an instant sensation, with over four million streams on Soundcloud. While singing live at clubs such as Largo in Los Angeles and gaining an audience, she continued to refine her voice and style, as well as uploading her songs online. She signed a record deal with RCA Records when she was only 17 years old.

Doja Cat’s debut EP, Purrr!, was published under the label MAUs. She released numerous tracks in early 2018, including “Roll With Us,” which became a hit and was added to Spotify’s global playlist.
